action

First, a young street gang is shown, whose leader is Ulla, a 15-year-old boy who makes the streets unsafe with his playmates. They built a "cave" in a gray backyard.

The main hero of the story is the 15-year-old Wolf Renner, a motor vehicle apprentice who works in a workshop. His mother is a cleaning lady, the father was killed in the First World War. Mother Renner could live on the small widow's pension , but her son is growing and needs a lot.

Wolf and six other Hitler Youths were already active in the "fighting time". The mother was often afraid for her son. His order from the "FäFü" (= Fähnleinführer) is to build a young train. With the other boys, he organizes a first home and advertising evening in the wine press school. At the beginning everyone has a queasy feeling. In the end, the young train consists of 52 pimps.

Wolf makes a personnel list and carefully keeps his service book. In a former workshop on Uhlandshöhe, which belongs to Assa's father, they find a home that they expand and remodel according to their own taste. Only Ulla is the only one who has not joined the Hitler Youth and is very upset.

In the summer, the Hitler Youth go to the North Sea for two weeks - to the island of Langeoog . There they set up a tent camp and play field games. (This section takes up a very large space.) In the meantime, Ulla lights the Hitler Youth home with gasoline. When they come back tanned from their journey, they stand in front of the smoking ruins. Despite this setback, they decide to build a new home on this site.

At this point the narrative breaks off suddenly without knowing anything about the completion of the house or about the arsonist Ulla.
