Heilig Hüsli is the name for the bridge chapel on the former bridgehead of the historic wooden bridge Rapperswil – Hurden in Rapperswil , a district of the Swiss municipality of Rapperswil-Jona in the canton of St. Gallen .

history

The sacred building was erected in its current form as a stone building in 1551, at the northern bridgehead of the pier, the former entrance to today's fish market square in the old town of Rapperswil, which was walled until 1836 . The chapel stands on a four-meter-high substructure, measures just 2 x 3 meters, with an eaves height of about three and a half meters, with an apse facing west in which a miraculous image was displayed. A wooden bridge chapel in Rapperswil was first mentioned in 1485; it is very likely that  a chapel was built on this section of the Camino de Santiago with the construction of the pier in 1360 .

After a legal dispute over a cattle pasture of the so-called Wydenklösterlis and the outbreak of an epidemic in the Rapperswil Hospital , its last superior, Katharine Scheuchzer, was accused of being a witch in 1563 after thoughtless remarks and on false accusations. After cruel torture, the old woman was sentenced to death, hand and foot shackled and put in a sack at Heilig Hüsli in Obersee.

With the construction of the Seedamm bridges for road and rail transport between the two lake shores and the demolition of the historic pier, the chapel remained the only visible remnant of the historic lake crossing. Until the construction of the wooden footbridge between Hurden and Rapperswil in 2001, the Heilig Hüsli stood isolated on a small island in the Obersee off Rapperswil and was only accessible by water.

Bridge chapels of the historic pier

The altarpiece, the outlines of which can be seen inside, is exhibited together with a representation of the Mother of God with the body of Christ in the Rapperswil City Museum. A replica by the artist Marlies Pekarek adorns the interior of the chapel, inaugurated and blessed on April 7, 2011, with the intention of returning the bridge chapel to its original purpose. The inside of the chapel can only be seen through the barred east side, following an old custom, coins are thrown into the interior by pilgrims.

Gerold Spervogel, administrator of Einsiedeln Monastery, built a sacred building in Hurden at his own expense in 1497 , which served as a pilgrim chapel near the southern bridgehead of the pier and has also been preserved.

Cultural property of national importance

The building has been a listed building since 1907 and is owned by the local community of Rapperswil-Jona. Restoration work took place in 1908, 1930, 1957 and 2010. The chapel is the landmark of the eastern head piece of the 2001 reconstruction of the historical lake crossing . In the Swiss inventory of cultural assets of national importance , the bridge chapel is listed as a class A object as part of the historically significant remains of the old pier and the early Bronze Age wetland settlement just a few meters from the chapel .
