The canton of Linth was a canton of the Helvetic Republic . It was formed in 1798 and existed until 1803 . The canton was named after the example of the French departments after a geographical feature, namely the Linth River . The canton capital was Glarus .

history

After the collapse of the old Confederation in 1798, various former common lords and places in eastern Switzerland declared themselves independent cantons. With the creation of the Helvetic Republic, these structures were dissolved again and combined in the cantons of Linth and Säntis .

The canton of Linth was founded on May 4, 1798 by a decree by Jean-Jacques Rapinat , government commissioner in the French Helvetian Army. Despite the resistance of the Senate of the Helvetic Republic to this change of territory, the French General Schauenburg carried out the order so that the electoral corps of the canton of Linth met on May 27 to appoint the deputies for the parliament of the Helvetic Republic.

The new canton consisted of the former federal place Glarus with its subject area Werdenberg and the former subject areas of the place Schwyz ( Höfe , March ) and the place Zurich ( Sax ). In addition there were the former common lords of Uznach , Gaster , Sargans and the city of Rapperswil as well as Obertoggenburg , which had previously belonged to the prince abbey of St. Gallen . The Obertoggenburg was assigned to the canton of Säntis by the constitution of Malmaison in 1801, which was also confirmed by the 2nd Helvetic constitution of 1802.

The capital was first Glarus, then after the restoration of the Canton of Glarus, the city of Rapperswil.

The canton of Linth was dissolved again by Napoleon's mediation act of 1803, with which Switzerland received a new constitution . Its territory was divided into the new cantons of Schwyz (Höfe, March), Glarus and the canton of St. Gallen (Rapperswil, Uznach, Gaster, Sargans, Werdenberg, Sax, Obertoggenburg).
