Märwil was first mentioned in a document in 827 as Marinwilare . In the 9th century, the St. Gallen monastery received property in Märwil, and before 1178 also St. Johann im Thurtal . In 1228 the Toggenburgers were wealthy here, then Märwil came under the influence of the Tobel Commandery , to whose jurisdiction it belonged entirely from 1489 to 1798. Until 1819, Märwil and Buch near Märwil formed the so-called main municipality of Märwil, which was responsible for civil rights, extinguishing and civil servants. However, the goods remained separate.

Märwil was already a parish in 1216 . The patronage of Georg and Maria Magdalena is mentioned in 1520. In 1275 Diethelm IV of Toggenburg left the Tobel church building . After the Reformation in 1529, Märwil became a branch of the Reformed Church in Affeltrangen in 1569 . In 1713 the Catholics gave up the church, but the division of the church property did not take place until 1807.

Grain was originally grown in three tiers . In addition, the Märwiler owned a Allmend and at times was peat mined, most recently from 1939 to 1945. In the second half of the 19th century, the transition to Feldgrasbau took place, in the First World War, the correction of leeks and a freight consolidation. Home embroidery was widespread from 1870 to 1914. In 1911 Märwil received a station on the Mittelthurgau Railway . From 1911 to 2003 there was a cider factory in Märwil, since 1930 a cheese shop and from 1948 to 1981 a shoe factory.
