Karl Freiherr von der Horst (* December 17, 1780 at Haldem Castle , today Stemwede ; † February 16, 1861 at Hollwinkel Castle , today Prussian Oldendorf ) was a German politician and government official.

From 1816 to 1825 Karl Freiherr von der Horst was the first district president of the Prussian administrative district of Minden in Westphalia .

origin

Karl von der Horst was born in 1780 as the son of the Horst family from the Westphalian nobility at his parents' castle Haldem. His parents were Friedrich Adolf August von der Horst († May 10, 1793) and his first wife Wilhelmine Luise Charlotte von Münster . The mother died in childbirth. The father later married the sister of his first wife Helene von Munster . His father was Herr zu Hollwinkel and coadjutor of the aristocratic free-worldly women's monastery in Levern. After the death of his father, his stepmother and her brother Ernst Friedrich Herbert zu Munster were declared his guardian.

Life

In 1802 he became a trainee lawyer at the War and Domain Chamber in Minden and in 1804 passed the higher state examination at the senior examination commission in Berlin . On February 21, 1805 he was elected by the district council of the Rahden district to King Friedrich Wilhelm III. proposed and appointed by it.

After the defeat of Prussia by Napoleon , the Peace of Tilsit and the cession of the Lübbecke district to the new Kingdom of Westphalia in 1807, Karl Freiherr von der Horst was entrusted with various administrative tasks based on the French model. In 1811 the region was incorporated directly into the French Empire. He was Maire , Arrondissement Councilor in the Arrondissement Minden and President of the Département Council of the Départment der Oberen Ems (unclear).

In March 1814 Karl Freiherr von der Horst took over the General Government of Belgium during the Wars of Liberation .

On July 3, 1815, he was appointed organizational commissioner for the future Prussian administrative district of Minden. On August 1, 1816, he took up the post of regional president in the newly created administrative district of Minden. He carried out this office until his temporary retirement on February 24, 1825, the transfer was due to "deranged financial circumstances". In 1842 he was finally released from civil service and retired. From 1826 to 1837 he was a member of the Provincial Parliament of the Province of Westphalia .

Karl Freiherr von der Horst was a Protestant and married to Sophia Charlotte Dorothea von Hammerstein-Equord (* April 24, 1786; † May 20, 1838). Her parents were Georg August von Hammerstein-Equord and Charlotte Sophie Henriette Wilhelmine von Münster .

Awards

Iron Cross 2nd class, Order of St. John , royal, Westphalian chamberlain. He was made an honorary citizen of the city of Minden on July 1, 1825 .
