Buhwil is a village about 2 km southwest of Sulgen . Buhwil was a local community until 1995 and has since been part of the community of Kradolf-Schönenberg , Weinfelden district in the Swiss canton of Thurgau . On January 1, 1996 , Buhwil merged with three other previous local communities to form the new political community of Kradolf-Schönenberg.

It was first mentioned in 838 as Puabinwilare . From the late Middle Ages onwards, the barons of Bürglen owned goods and rights in Buhwil. From 1463 to approx. 1600, Anwil Castle in Buhwil was owned by the von Helmsdorf family . From the 17th century at the latest, the place belonged to the abbot-Saint-Gallic rule of Bürglen . From 1816 to 1995, Anstettenbuhwil (also called Niederbuhwil), Scherersbuhwil (also called Oberbuhwil) and Hard-Buhwil as well as the hamlets of Bötschismühle, Hinterbach and Hintermühle formed the local community of Buhwil, initially called Scherersbuhwil , which was part of the then Munizipalgemeinde Neukirch an der Thur- and during Ritzisbuhwil belonged to the former local community Schönholzerswilen.

In the Middle Ages , Buhwil was in the parish of Bussnang . After the Reformation in 1529, the predominantly Reformed residents turned to Neukirch , while the Catholics stayed at the Bussnang branch in Schönholzerswilen .

Fruit and arable farming, from 1870 on cattle farming, milling, embroidery, as well as a sawmill (until 1972), a mechanical workshop and a building materials company each provided merit. In 1990, 39% of those employed in Buhwil were employed in the first and 48% in the second economic sector. Today the metal construction company Kernen AG with 30 employees is the largest employer in the village. After the population in the former farming village had decreased by around a third between 1950 and 1970, single-family houses have been built throughout the village.

The coat of arms of the Lords of Helmsdorf , who were the owners of Anwil Castle from 1463 to 1608, served as a template for the Buhwil local coat of arms.

Of the total of 327 inhabitants in Buhwil in 2018, 19 or 5.8% were foreign nationals. 137 (41.9%) were Protestant Reformed and 74 (22.6%) were Roman Catholic.

Attractions

Listed Hintermühle at the village exit to Neukirch

The ruins of Anwil above the village were mentioned in 1387 as Anwil Castle. In 1297 the Wunnenberg castle is mentioned, the remains of which can be found in the forest above the Hintermühle. The Hintermühle was built in 1773 and was in operation until 1900.
