Jakob Stark (born September 8, 1958 in Frauenfeld ) is a Swiss politician ( SVP ). He has been a government councilor in the canton of Thurgau since June 2006 and has headed the Department of Finance and Social Affairs since 2014. In the 2019 elections , he was elected to the Council of States in the first ballot on October 20 .

Personal

Jakob Stark grew up with four siblings on the farm of his parents Hans and Alice Stark-Beglinger in Neukirch an der Thur . He is married to Cornelia Stark-Bartholdi and has two teenage children. Stark lives in Buhwil in the municipality of Kradolf-Schönenberg and is a citizen of Hohentannen and Teufen . In his free time he runs or works in his own small vineyard. He is also a member of various associations in the region.

education and profession

Stark attended primary school in Neukrich an der Thur and then secondary school in Schönholzerswilen . He then attended the cantonal school in Frauenfeld, where he obtained the type C Matura . He completed his studies in general history, economics and journalism, which he completed in 1986 with a licentiate (lic. Phil. I), at the University of Zurich . He then worked as a journalist and editor for various newspapers such as the Tages-Anzeiger , the Thurgauer Zeitung and the St. Galler Tagblatt . In 1993 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. I with a thesis on the failure of the replacement of tithes and basic interest in Helvetik using the example of the implementation of the tax and base load laws in the canton of Thurgau. In September 1995, Stark was in the office of the municipality Ammann elected by Kradolf-Schönenberg, which he held to the Executive Council in 2006 until his election.

Political activity

Stark started his political career in 1988 as a part-time mayor of Buhwil. When the municipalities of Buhwil, Neukrich ad Thur, Kradolf and Schönenberg merged to form the political municipality of Kradolf-Schönenberg, Stark became the new municipality's first mayor in 1996. In 1996 he was also elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Thurgau, where he chaired the SVP parliamentary group from 2000 to 2006. In addition, Stark was President of the Association of Thurgau Municipalities from 2004 to 2006. After the resignation of Government Councilor Roland Eberle , Stark was proposed and also elected as his successor. On June 1, 2006, he took up his post as a government councilor, replacing Bernhard Koch as head of the Department of Education and Culture. Stark was re-elected in 2008 and took over the Department of Building and Environment from the resigning Hans Peter Ruprecht . He has headed the Department of Finance and Social Affairs since 2014. He was President of the Government Council in the 2010/11, 2015/16 and the 2019/20 current year. In August 2019, he announced that he would no longer run in the 2020 government council elections and that he would leave office on May 31, 2020. In the 2019 elections , he was elected to the Council of States in the first ballot on October 20 .
