Bernhard Koch (politician)

Bernhard Koch (born January 16, 1949 in Zihlschlacht ) is a Swiss politician ( CVP ). From June 2000 to May 2014 he was a member of the government in the canton of Thurgau and was most recently responsible for the finance and social affairs department.

Life

Koch attended primary school in Sitterdorf and graduated from Bischofszell secondary school. He then completed an apprenticeship as a businessman with a commercial diploma and trained as a qualified administrative economist. Until 1972, Koch worked in the private sector, including as an accountant and in personnel administration. He then worked for the then municipal community of Zihlschlacht, first as a clerk and from 1975 as a community clerk . From 1979 to 1991 he was finally mayor . After he was elected mayor of Bischofszell in 1991, he remained in this position until his election to the government council in 2000.

His political career started Bernhard Koch in 1979 with the election of the mayor of Munizipalgemeinde Zihlschlacht, which he remained until his election in 1991 to the town of Bischofszell Ammann. In 1980 he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Thurgau, where he presided over the CVP parliamentary group from 1988 to 1999. Koch was elected to the government council by the Thurgau people in 2000 and took office on June 1st. From 2000 to 2006, Koch was head of the Department of Education and Culture in the government council, where he carried out ambitious educational reforms. In June 2006 he finally handed over this office to Jakob Stark and took over the department of finance and social affairs. In the 2003/04, 2008/09 and 2013/14 years of office, Koch was the district president. In October 2013, Koch announced that he was stepping down in late May 2014.

Koch is married to Susi Koch-Gsell and has three grown-up sons. He lives in Bischofszell and is a citizen of Wuppenau .
