Verena Herzog (born February 7, 1956 in Winterthur ) is a Swiss politician ( SVP ) and national councilor from the canton of Thurgau .

biography

After graduating from high school in Winterthur, Verena Herzog completed the kindergarten teacher training course in St. Gallen. She then worked as a kindergarten teacher, and since 2001 she has been the administrative manager of an orthodontic practice. She lives in Frauenfeld , is married and has three grown children.

Herzog started her political career in 1997 as a member of the Frauenfeld primary school authority, of which she was a member until 2009. In 2007 she moved to the Grand Council for Jakob Turnheer, who had resigned, and in 2009 she became a councilor in Frauenfeld. Herzog ran in the National Council elections in 2007 and 2011 and ended up on the first substitute place in 2011. With Peter Spuhler's resignation from the National Council at the end of 2012, she moved to the National Council for the SVP in 2013. Due to her mandate from the National Council, she resigned as a cantonal and municipal councilor. She was confirmed in office in the National Council elections in 2015 and 2019.

Herzog's focus is family and education policy. She represents a conservative family image. She is a member of the association “For a traditional family”, founded in 2015 by conservative and church-based circles. This wants to strengthen the traditional family and prevent same-sex marriage in Switzerland. In 2019, criticism arose when she wrote in the SVP party newspaper that early intervention for children and crèches reminded her of "the reprehensible ideas with which the contract children were given away for better education".
