The settlement was first mentioned in 1200 as Matewilare . From 1200 the ministerial offices of Mattwil can be identified. From the late Middle Ages to 1798, a third of Mattwil belonged to the Berg court with an appeal to the Constance court , the other two thirds to the so-called High Courts , in which the Thurgau bailiffs exercised the lower and high jurisdiction. In the 17th century, the Thurgau bailiffs in Mattwil issued parish letters confirming his rights.

Mattwil always shared the fate of the Langrickenbach parish . In 1844, Klarsreuti and Mattwil united to form a school community , and in 1959 the school communities Birwinken, Mattwil-Klarsreuti and Happerswil-Buch .

Until the middle of the 20th century, the village was dominated by agriculture. The mill mentioned in 1600 was in operation until around 1920. In the 19th century, colored weaving (cotton) and mechanical embroidery were common.
