Mattwil is a village in the municipality of Birwinken in the Weinfelden district of the Swiss canton of Thurgau .
From 1803 to 1994 Mattwil formed a local parish in what was then the municipality of Birwinken. On January 1, 1995 , the local parish merged with the municipal parish to form the political municipality of Birwinken.

Mattwil is located on the Seerücken on the Sulgen - Altnau road . Mattwil and Altighofen belonged to the local community.
history
The settlement was first mentioned in 1200 as Matewilare . From 1200 the ministerial offices of Mattwil can be identified. From the late Middle Ages to 1798, a third of Mattwil belonged to the Berg court with an appeal to the Constance court , the other two thirds to the so-called High Courts , in which the Thurgau bailiffs exercised the lower and high jurisdiction. In the 17th century, the Thurgau bailiffs in Mattwil issued parish letters confirming his rights.
Mattwil always shared the fate of the Langrickenbach parish . In 1844, Klarsreuti and Mattwil united to form a school community , and in 1959 the school communities Birwinken, Mattwil-Klarsreuti and Happerswil-Buch .
Until the middle of the 20th century, the village was dominated by agriculture. The mill mentioned in 1600 was in operation until around 1920. In the 19th century, colored weaving (cotton) and mechanical embroidery were common.

The split in the coat of arms symbolizes the former separation from Mattwil. The roses in both halves come from the barons of Güttingen . The colors yellow and red show the affiliation to the Landvogtei Thurgau and the colors red and white to the rule Berg.

Of the total of 341 inhabitants in the village of Mattwil in 2018, 72 or 21.1% were foreign nationals. 119 (34.9%) were Protestant Reformed and 86 (25.2%) were Roman Catholic.
