Istighofen is a former municipality and a village in the municipality of Bürglen in the Weinfelden district of the canton of Thurgau in Switzerland .

From 1816 to 1994 Istighofen was a local parish of the Munizipalgemeinde Bussnang . On January 1, 1995 , the Istighofen municipality merged to form the political municipality of Bürglen .

The bridge village of Istighofen an der Thur and the Moos settlement are halfway between Konstanz and Wil (SG) .

history

Istighofen was first mentioned in 832 as Justineshova . In the early Middle Ages, the St. Gallen monastery owned goods here. The lower court of Istighofen was part of the Bürglen rule from the late Middle Ages until 1798 and, in addition to Istighofen, also comprised Unter- and Niederbuhwil , a part of Moos and Hosenruck . The judge was alternately provided by Istighofen and Buhwil.

Ecclesiastically, Istighofen belonged to Wertbühl , where the Catholics are still ecclesiastical today. The Reformed began to visit the church in Bussnang in 1529, and in 1865 they moved to the Bürglen parish.

In 1837 a bridge replaced the ferry across the Thur. In Istighofen, grain was grown in three tents and a little bit of viticulture, and from the middle of the 19th century cattle, dairy and fruit growing. In 1908, the Jakob Schmidheiny & Co. company in Heerbrugg took over the brickworks and brickworks with clay deposits in Istighofen and Mettlen and incorporated them into the East Swiss brickworks. From 1941 the works belonged to the Zürcher Ziegeleien , which has been called ZZ Wancor since 1997 and has been a company of the Wienerberger Group since 1999 . In 1989 the company employed 240 people and in 2004 was the largest employer in the municipality of Bürglen with 85 employees.

The village of Istighofen had 612 inhabitants in 2018. 37 of them belonged to the Bussnang community (including in Wertbühl ) . Of the 575 Istighofner residents of the Bürglen community, 136 or 23.7% were foreign nationals. 195 (33.9%) were Roman Catholic and 185 (32.2%) Protestant Reformed.
