Schönenberg was mentioned in a document in 838 as Thuruftisthorf and in 1359 as Schönnenberg . Abbot Bernwig of St. Gallen gave the village to a Wolvini in 838. In the 12th century, the episcopal Constance ministers built a castle which they called Schönenberg and whose name gradually carried over to the village in the 14th century. In 1360 the Bishop of Constance took over the lower court rule, formed the office of Schönenberg with the Rotten Andreuti, Aspenreuti, Katzensteig, Kenzenau and a number of individual farms as well as Neukirch, Halden and Schweizersholz and handed its administration to his Obervogt in Bischofszell , who held it until 1798. Schönenberg shared the fate of Sulgen in church, but had the right to attend the church service in Neukirch.

The community was formed in 1798. In 1872 the local community replaced the ferry with a bridge over the Thur. The residents cultivated grain in three tents as well as growing fruit, wine, horticulture and grass. The dairy industry began in the 19th century. A mill was mentioned as early as 1361, which existed until 1958. In 1676 a mill right allowed the operation of the lower mill, which ran until 1880. In the 19th century, some embroidery was produced at home . Thanks to the hydropower of the Thur , Heinrich Brunner founded a silk weaving mill in Schönenberg in 1863, which initially produced around 140 looms. From 1900 the company was called Siber & Wehrli and in 1910 employed 690 people; In 1925 it was converted into a stock corporation. During the Great Depression in 1932, 350 looms were still running, and in 1978 operations were stopped. The power center of the silk weaving mill can now be visited as an industrial monument. In 1876 Schönenberg received a connection to the Bischofszellerbahn with the station in Kradolf on the opposite side of the Thursday . In the 20th century, jobs in Schönenberg were mainly provided by industry, 80% in 1920 and 63% in 1980. Today the various wood processing companies are important employers. After 1980, numerous new buildings led to an increase in the population.
