The Last ruin stands on a hilltop in the Swiss municipality of Kradolf-Schönenberg in the canton of Thurgau . The former tower castle was only given its name in the late Middle Ages from a neighboring courtyard of the same name. It was previously known under the name Vesti or Burg Schönenberg .

The ruins are the remains of an almost square residential tower with a floor area of 10 × 11 meters. Its walls are still twelve meters high and have three floors. The former high entrance can be seen in its north wall .

history

The complex was built in the first half of the 12th century by the Lords of Schönenberg. As Ministeriale of the Bishop of Constance they had received Schönenberg from the diocese as a fief . Bertoldus and Rodolfo de castro Scoenenberc were first mentioned in 1159 . Her descendant Friedrich II von Schönenberg was mentioned as a crusader in a document in 1211 .

John III Due to financial difficulties, von Schönenberg had to return the castle and the associated lands to the bishop in 1352 and eight years later also formally renounced all his rights to this property. The castle then came to the Lords of Heidelberg.

In 1407 Schönenberg was destroyed by the insurgents in the Appenzell Wars, but was rebuilt soon afterwards. From 1460, however, no more residents of the castle were recorded, so that the complex gradually fell into disrepair.

In 1804 the ruins came into the possession of the still young canton of Thurgau, which sold them to a private person in 1869. In 1960 the former municipality of Neukirch became the owner of the castle and donated it in 1974 to the cooperative for the preservation of the ruins of Last and Heuberg .

Renovation work

From 1974 onwards, numerous renovation work was carried out on the residential tower; last time in 2004.

Nowadays, the ruin next to the nearby Heuberg castle ruins is an excursion destination in the region; not least because there is a barbecue area on the hilltop. Two hiking trails lead there from Schönenberg .
