The Seeburg Castle is located in Kreuzlingen within a park at the Swiss shores of Lake Constance .

history

1598 built Constance Jakob Atzenholz-Zollikofer of Tattenwiler a castle named Neuhorn , the later the abbots of Kreuzlingen Augustiner pin served as a summer residence. It burned down completely in 1633 and was restored by Abbot Augustin I Gimmi in 1664. It was a simple building cube with a gable roof and a square surrounding wall.

Since 1833 it has housed the Thurgau teachers' college . The first director was the well-known educator Johann Jacob Wehrli (1790–1855). After the abolition of the monastery, the Seeburg fell to the canton of Thurgau in 1848, which in 1850 moved the seminary to the convent building of the former monastery and sold the Seeburg in 1852.

Gottfried Ferdinand Amman, the later owner, rebuilt it in 1870 in the style of historicism to the castle in today's appearance. The plans were drawn up by Ernst Jung (1841–1912), an architect in Winterthur. Amman's son, August, designed the Seeburg park between 1894 and 1895.

Georg Gottfried Volkart-Ammann (1850–1928), who was a brother-in-law of Theodor Reinhart , acquired the castle from his brother-in-law August Ferdinand Ammann in 1907 and resigned as a partner in the Volkart brothers . Later he bequeathed the Seeburg to his three daughters.

After the voters had approved the purchase with a random majority of twenty-eight votes, the Seeburg including the park became the property of the city of Kreuzlingen in 1958. The Seeburg was extensively renovated from 1982 to 1984 by the Ernst Oberhänsli architects' office, with Jürg Ganz responsible for the cantonal preservation of monuments. Until the lake was filled in in the 1960s, the Seeburg stood directly on the shore of Lake Constance. A restaurant has been integrated into Seeburg Castle since 1993.
