Sonnenberg Castle

The Sonnenberg Castle is located in Lauchetal in the town of Stettfurt , in the district of Frauenfeld of the Canton of Thurgau in Switzerland .

history

The complex is first mentioned in 1242 as Sunnunbergh . It was the seat of the von Sonnenberg family from Reichau. In 1360 the lower court rule came through marriage to Hermann IV von Landenberg-Greifensee . The original building was destroyed by the Schwyz in the Appenzell Wars in 1407 and in the Old Zurich War in 1444 , but was rebuilt by the Landenbergers . In 1460 Bernhard Gradner threatened the facility and threatened to drain the fish pond. Then everything went to the widow of Beringer X. von Landenberg, (a son of Hugo von Landenberg), Barbara von Knöringen .

In 1528 the Reichenau monastery renounced the fiefdom . Around 1542, Ulrich von Breitenlandenberg von Altenklingen and his son Hans Michael acquired the castle and dominion. They pledged both to Mrs. Anna Ziegler from Schaffhausen. In 1585 Albrecht von Breitenlandenberg sat on Sonnenberg.

In 1561 Hans Gutenson from St. Gallen acquired the castle and the manor. He left it to his sons, David and Thomas, the latter sold in 1580 to Jost Zollikofer from the Zollikofer von Altenklingen family in St. Gallen , who had it rebuilt as a splendid palace by Mathäus Höbel in the style of Schloss Altenklingen after the fire in 1596 . Due to the construction costs, his son Kaspar Zollikofer zu Sonnenberg was forced to sell to Colonel Konrad von Beroldingen from Uri in 1618 . In 1678 the son Sebastian Ludwig von Beroldingen, Obervogt at Schloss Bischofszell , wanted to sell it to the city of St. Gallen, but the Catholic towns refused to confirm the sale and his brother, Colonel Karl Konrad von Beroldingen, asserted his right to move. In the same year he sold it to Einsiedeln Abbey, which used it as a court until 1798 and then as an estate.

In 2007, the Austrian financier Christian Baha bought the castle and the associated farm with 150 hectares of fields, meadows, forests and vines. The castle is currently being restored and rebuilt. In 2009, traces of settlement from the fourth century BC were found during work. Found.
