Mathäus Höbel also Matthias Höbel / Heubel (* around 1540 in Eggen near Martinszell ; † after 1605 ) was a builder and architect of the German Renaissance .

Life

Mathäus Höbel came from the hamlet of Eggen near Martinszell (since 1976 part of Waltenhofen ) and was foreman in the imperial city of Kempten in 1564 . At first he was probably a master bricklayer, but from 1577 he also hired himself as a master builder in the Allgäu and Switzerland. Höbel was a city architect in Kempten for over 40 years and lived in a company apartment.

In 1585 Höbel began expanding and upgrading the beguinage in Kempten.

For the Zollikofer patrician family from St. Gallen , he built Altenklingen Castle in the summer of 1586 in an eleven-week construction period, and the Schlössli am Spisertor in 1587.

From 1593 he built the Schlössle on Fischerstrasse for the then mayor Ulrich Dorn .

The new construction of Falkensberg Castle by Höbel in 1593, which was destroyed again in the Thirty Years' War , is no longer preserved .

In 1596 he rebuilt the burned down Sonnenberg Castle in a new style for the Zollikofer family.

He also upgraded the city ​​fortifications of Kempten , for example Höbel submitted a draft for the expansion of the Rieggerturm.
