The Mammertshofen Castle in Roggwil in the canton of Thurgau is one of the most powerful mountain keeps in Switzerland . It was the seat of the St. Gallic marshals of the same name , whose line died out around 1360. Under the Castell taverns , the castle was taken without a fight in the Appenzell Wars and therefore not destroyed. She remained with this family until 1645. In 1792 the Orlandi family from Bevers (GR) acquired the large property for 80,000 guilders with the consent of Abbot Beda Angehrn of St. Gallen . Approx. 300 Jucharten (approx. 108 ha) of land and forest with the four farms, "Buhof", "Holzerhof", "Buemüli" and "Winkel" as well as two large vineyards belonged to it. The castle has been privately owned by the same family since 1792 .

Masonry of the keep

In the stonework of the keep from the 13th century there are boulders that weigh up to three tons . The outstandingly raised, wooden upper aisle dates from the early 16th century. Conversions took place in 1591 and 1655. The keep has remained unchanged since then. The old house was rebuilt in 1694 under the mayor of Constance and a chapel was added. Johann Christoph Kunkler had the north-west building, the battlement wall with the neo-Gothic pointed arched gate and the bridge built in 1852. Various professional interior restorations have been carried out since 1986.

Mammertshofen Castle was a member of the secular bank in the court of jurisdiction in Thurgau .
