Heidelberg Castle

The Heidelberg Castle in Thurgau village Hohentannen was the country retreat of Jacob Grubenmann built and G. Held on behalf of Leonhard von Muralt-Egger 1744-1745. Friedrich von Muralt ran a private educational institute in the castle from 1830. In 1901 the family sold the castle. It then changed hands a few times and was a retirement home between 1976 and 1998. Today it is used again as a residential building.

The castle is located about three hundred meters south of the former Heidelberg Castle, which was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Heidelberg. The family was first mentioned in a document in 1137. The castle was destroyed in 1403 by the Appenzell people.
