history

Spiegelberg Castle, copper engraving by David Herrliberger , 18th century

Spiegelberg Castle, built in the 13th century, was initially the ancestral seat of the Barons von Spiegelberg . In 1376 it passed to Count Donath von Toggenburg and, after his death in 1402, as heir to Wilhelm von Montfort . From 1376 to 1595, Spiegelberg was united with Wittenwil to form one dominion , from the late 14th century to around 1640 the Dotnacht court belonged to the Spiegelberg dominion.

After it was destroyed in the Appenzell War in 1407, the fortress was rebuilt and in 1436 came by marriage to Margrave Wilhelm von Hochberg - Rötelen , who also owned Griesenberg . Emperor Friedrich III. In the Old Zurich War , Hochberg transferred the supreme command of the Austrian and Zurich troops fighting against the Confederates. On April 23, 1444, Wiler mercenaries set out together with the Schwyzers in their town to storm the Spiegelberg and Griesenberg castles at night.

In 1464 Hans Muntprat bought the rebuilt castle. The new owners called themselves "Muntprat von Spiegelberg" as early as 1490. In 1533 the castle suffered fire damage due to a leaky chimney . In 1582, Wilhelm von Breitenlandenberg acquired the castle and the chapel. At that time, the Spiegelberg dominion comprised the villages of Weingarten and Wetzikon as well as the farms bubbles mountain and Grüssi . World iconWorld icon

Remains of Spiegelberg Castle

In 1629 the Fischingen monastery bought Spiegelberg and in 1639 was able to detach the rule from the Constance cathedral fiefdom . Now the Fischingen governor managed Spiegelberg and Lommis from Lommis Castle and the castle remained uninhabited. After 1759 the castle fell into disrepair and in 1821 it was demolished along with the chapel.

description

The castle consisted of the main tower with an extension, the main building, another tower, two cellars and a grain chute. Beyond the moat were the chapel, a stable and a barn. A forecourt enclosed a summer cottage and a tube well .
