The castle Anwil-Buhwil was as a residential tower built and stands on a hill in Kradolf-Schönenberg in the Swiss canton of Thurgau .

history

The Anwil-Buhwil castle complex was first mentioned in 1385. The first residential tower was built in the middle of the 13th century, as excavations (1984) showed. There was a cistern in the two to three-story residential tower . The castle belonged to the von Röta family in the 14th century and was sold to the von Sax family in 1387 . In 1405 the property was looted and destroyed by the Appenzell people . In 1440 the castle was mentioned again in writing and in 1463 it was sold to the Knights of Helmsdorf . Various changes of ownership took place until the 17th century. The castle was then no longer inhabited and fell into disrepair.

The castle complex has been archaeologically examined and renovated several times (1984, 2005 and 2016). The investigations with ground penetrating radar yielded new knowledge about the buildings around the tower.

Today the facility is owned by the “Genossenschaft ruins Kradolf-Schönenberg” and is looked after by them.
