Liebburg Castle is a 499 m above sea level. M. located castle estate, built in the 18th century, in the political municipality of Lengwil in the Kreuzlingen district of the canton of Thurgau in Switzerland . It is located southeast of the city of Kreuzlingen on the Seerücken .

history

The present castle dates from the second half of the 18th century. It was built after an earthquake allegedly made the old Liebburg, some 250 m away, uninhabitable.

This castle, possibly from the early Middle Ages, is said to have been in the possession of the Constance patrician Johannes von Schwarzach in 1426 . In 1476 the Bishop of Constance Otto IV von Sonnenberg gave it as a fief to the Mayor of Constance Ulrich Blarer, known as “the rich”. A century later it became the residence of Junker Andreas Reichlin von Meldegg . His daughter brought the property into marriage in 1609 with Junker Marx von Ulm , Herr von Griesenberg . A palace chapel was established around 1600 and the Roman Catholic mass was reintroduced, although the majority of the population remained in the Protestant Reformed faith. As already mentioned, the Liebburg is said to have been destroyed by an earthquake in 1750. In 1760 this went to the cathedral monastery in Constance.

Liebburg Castle, built in the second half of the 18th century, served as the summer residence of the Constance bishops. In the course of secularization , the property came into private ownership in 1803. During a renovation around 1899, it was given the lantern-like structure and today's facade with the stepped gable. In the 20th century, the owner changed 18 times. Since 1970 Liebburg Castle has been owned by the Kolb family, who have extensively renovated it.
