A chronicle reports that in 1407 during the Appenzell Wars, the Appenzell people destroyed the castle and town of Tannegg on their “Burgenbruch-Runde”.

Although the castle and town were intended to be the center of power for the Bishop of Constance in Hinterthurgau, in 1693 the castle, which was a long way from the rest of the bishopric's territory, was sold to the Fischingen monastery together with the Tannegg office .

The main tower of the fortress still stood upright until 1837. This was removed and the stones were used to build bridges.

description

The southern wall of large boulders is exposed and the stump of the main tower is clearly visible. The outside of the tower wall consists of large boulders, while the inside is made up of hewn tuff blocks . The Tannegg tower was rectangular and was about 15.2 × 11.6 m on the outside and 8 × 5.2 m on the inside. With its imposing masses, it is reminiscent of towers that have been preserved in the Frauenfeld , Arbon , Elgg and Hegi castles near Winterthur.
