Johannes Altherr

John Altherr (* 16th March 1850 in memory ; † 2. March 1928 in memory; heimatberechtigt in memory) was a Swiss businessman and Councilor of the Canton of Appenzell Outer Rhodes .

Life

Johannes Altherr was born as the son of Johann Konrad Altherr, embroidery manufacturer and chief judge , and Elisabeth Altherr née Rüsch in 1850. In 1875 he married Babette Eugster, a daughter of Jakob Eugster, the owner of the Megglen estate in Speicher. After his divorce he married Anna Leumann, a daughter of the commandant Johann Jakob Leumann, in 1880. From 1861 to 1866, Johannes Altherr attended the Trogen Cantonal School , before completing a commercial training course in Le Locle from 1866 to 1868 . From 1870 to 1873 he worked as an employee in the textile trading house of his uncle Adolf Rüsch in New York . In 1876, Johannes Altherr and his brother took over their father's finishing company , but gradually withdrew from business life in favor of his judicial work. In 1907 he ceded his share of the business to his brother's son. Altherr was a district judge from 1882 to 1888. Then, in 1888, he was elected to the government council of Appenzell Ausserrhoden and remained in office until 1894. From 1894 to 1904 and later again from 1907 to 1923 he served as chief judge. In between, from 1896 to 1904, Johannes Altherr was President of the Supreme Court. He was largely responsible for improving the cantonal investigation system.
