Johann Christoph Kunkler

Johann Christoph Kunkler (born December 18, 1813 in St. Gallen ; † November 2, 1898 there ) was a Swiss architect.

Life

Johann Christoph Kunkler, father of Gottfried Julius Kunkler and Hedwig Kunkler , studied architecture at the Karlsruhe Polytechnic from 1832–34 and then until 1836 at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts .

In 1837 he started working for Gustav Albert Wegmann in Zurich. In 1838 he opened his own office in St. Gallen and subsequently worked mainly in his hometown.

Kunkler was President of the Swiss Society for the Preservation of Historical Art Monuments and from 1889–95 of the Federal Art Commission . He advocated the preservation of Swiss antiquities. He bequeathed his library to the Vadiana St. Gallen cantonal library .

  • Aadorf : Catholic Church of St. Alexander . New construction using the tower shaft from 1478 together with Joachim Brenner (1863–65).
  • Alt St. Johann : Evangelical Church (1861).
  • Bad Ragaz : drinking and bathing establishment (1867/68).
  • Lichtensteig : parity church in neo-Gothic style (1866–68, broken off in 1968).
  • Rapperswil SG : Reformed Church (1839–42).
  • Roggwil TG : Mammertshofen Castle : Extension buildings: Northwest building, the battlement wall with neo-Gothic pointed arch and the bridge (1852).
  • St. Gallen :
    • Citizens Hospital (1840–45).
    • St. Laurence's Church : reconstruction (1850–54).
    • City theater on the Bohl in neo-baroque style (1855–57; demolished 1971).
    • Schoolhouse Blumenau (1867–69; renovated and rebuilt 1998–2002).
    • Nature and art museum in the Neo-Renaissance style, one of the oldest museums and at the same time one of the most important neo-classical buildings in Switzerland (1873–77; 1987 - after years of decline - renovated and expanded by Marcel Ferrier ).
    • Helvetia building on Helvetiaplatz in the classicist style (1876–78, together with his son; demolished in 1977, today the cantonal bank is located there).
  • Zurich : Administration building of the accident insurance company "Zurich" on Mythenquai (1899/1901; together with his son).
