Theodor Reinhart (born November 29, 1849 in Winterthur ; † January 17, 1919 there ) was a Swiss industrialist and patron .

Life

Theodor Reinhart was born in 1849 as the son of the businessman and politician Johann Caspar Reinhart and Bertha Juliana (née Hess). His older brother, Paul Reinhart , later took over his father's cotton business Geilinger & Blum , which later became Paul Reinhart & Cie. (now Paul Reinhart AG ).

Reinhart attended high school in Winterthur, which he graduated from in 1865 with the Matura . During his school days he became a member of the Vitodurania middle school association . He then studied in Berlin , Heidelberg and Zurich and was awarded a Dr. iur. PhD. This was followed by further studies in Geneva and commercial training in Le Havre and New York . In 1876 he married Lilly Volkart (1855–1906), the daughter of Salomon Volkart, whereby in 1879 he became a partner in the trading company Gebrüder Volkart . In 1912 he took over the business completely and continued to run it successfully until his death.

The marriage with Lilly had five children, some of whom made a name for themselves in Winterthur by continuing their father's business and as patrons, including Georg (1877–1955), Hans (1880–1963), Werner (1884–1951) ) and Oskar (1885–1965). The Villa Rychenberg , built by him in 1888, was later used by Oskar to expand the art collection he had already started; today the music school is housed there. In addition to collecting art himself, he also sponsored several well-known artists of his time, such as B. Ferdinand Hodler , Karl Hofer , Hermann Haller , Konrad Ferdinand Edmund von Freyhold and Hans Brühlmann . Theodor was also active in the Federal Art Commission from 1905 to 1907 and was a member of the National Bank's board of directors . From 1885 to 1901 he belonged to the extended city council of Winterthur for the radicals (FDP).
