Albert Knoepfli

Albert Knoepfli (born December 9, 1909 in Bischofszell , TG ; † December 14, 2002 in Aadorf ) was a Swiss art historian and monument conservator .

Life

Albert Knoepfli studied art and music , history , German and Romance studies in Basel , Grenoble and Perugia . From 1935 to 1945 he was a secondary school teacher in Aadorf, from 1945 to 1974 inventor of the art monuments of the canton of Thurgau and its first curator. In 1962 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich , where he became a lecturer in 1964, and from 1972 to 1979 he headed the Institute for Monument Preservation at the ETH Zurich .

He was particularly interested in the art monuments of the canton of Thurgau and the Lake Constance area as well as the architecture of the railroad. In 1975 he brought his map collection, comprising over 6500 objects, to the Dr. Albert Knoepfli Foundation , which is located in the Bischofszell local museum.

In 1961 he received the Lake Constance Literature Prize of the city of Überlingen, and in 1983 the Karl-Friedrich-Schinkel-Ring from the German National Committee for Monument Protection .

Albert Knoepfli was an honorary citizen of Bischofszell.
