Bernwig

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bernwig was abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Gallen from 837 to 840/841 . On May 25, 837 he was mentioned for the first time as abbot of the St. Gallen monastery. His date of birth is unknown; he died on December 8th of an unknown year.

Life

Bernwig appears frequently as a writer between 809 and 826. Before that he is noted as a witness. After that (between 827 and 831) he is named as dean. In Reichenauer fraternization book there is an entry of the same name and also in the profession book of St. Gallen. Bernwig was elected abbot with the permission of Emperor Ludwig the Pious and at the request of his predecessor Gozbert ; so tells Ratpert . He goes on to say that Bernwig sided with Lothar when the sons of Emperor Ludwig were involved in an inheritance dispute. This statement on Lothar cost him the office of abbot. It can be assumed that Bernwig's deposition took place between August 840 and April 841, when Ludwig the German became lord of Alemannia after his victory over Lothar .
