Engilbert of St. Gallen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Engilbert was abbot of St. Gallen for a short period of time (840/841) . Nothing is known about his life data. He may have passed away on January 22nd of an unknown year. An entry in the St. Gallen necrology cannot be clearly identified with this Engilbert.

Term of office

Like his predecessor Bernwig, Engilbert may have chosen the wrong faction in the succession dispute after the death of Ludwig the Pious . Seizing Lothar's side as he advanced, but was finally defeated at Fontenoy by Ludwig the German , his brother, Engilbert was deposed again in 841 by Ludwig, who had previously installed him.
