The place was first mentioned in 759 as Heidolviswilare . Before 1798, Heldswil formed the lower court of Heldswil in the Bürglen rule with the greater part of Buchackern and part of Götighofen , while the lower court of Hüttenswil belonged partly to the abbot of St. Gallen ( mountain court ) and partly to the Bürglen rule.

Ecclesiastically, Heldswil shared the fate of the Sulgen parish . The St. Katharina Chapel, consecrated in Heldswil in 1489, belonged to the Canons' Monastery of St. Pelagius in Bischofszell, which held the collature . In 1566 the monastery took back the benefice .

Up until the 19th century, viticulture and arable farming as well as peat production were predominant, then cattle, dairy and fruit growing. Around 1900, embroidery offered additional income. 1940-1947 took place the amelioration of the reed. Although some businesses have recently settled, Heldswil has remained a farming village.
