The Aach or Salmsacher Aach is a stream and from the state road bridge Oberaach a river in the Swiss canton of Thurgau .

The Aach rises between Sulgen and Riedt bei Erlen and then flows past Riedt and through Erlen . The water runs south past Engishofen , through Oberaach and past Niederaach , Amriswil and Hatswil , where the Aach receives the water from the Aachtal wastewater treatment plant . It forms the municipal boundary between Romanshorn and Salmsach , and then flows into the Salmsacher Bay of Lake Constance after 17.59 kilometers .

The Aach is an important spawning area for lake trout living in Lake Constance . In order to provide them with optimal conditions for reproduction, gravel was poured into the river at certain points or obstacles for the fish to climb were removed.

pollution

The Aach contains residues of pesticides. A large part of the pesticide pollution can be attributed to pesticides from fruit growing .

Between 1996 and 2016 there were eight cases of acute water pollution in the Aach. Most of the time, liquid manure or rainwater contaminated with liquid manure got into the water. In 2015, thousands of fish and small organisms died over a length of around two kilometers, which led to the conviction of a pig farmer in 2018.

In 2020 a broken rainwater pipe was found, which allowed oil to enter the Aach for a long time. It came from contaminated sites in the Romanshorn works yard , where a foundry used to be.
