history

Catholic Church of St. John Nepomuk

Heiligkreuz was mentioned in a document in 1275 as Amptencelle . Until the 16th century, the place was called Amtzell or Amptenzell, from the 16th century onwards , the current name came from the church patronage .

From the Middle Ages to 1798, Heiligkreuz was part of the prince-abbot-Sankt -Gallic mountain court and was administered from the Wileramt . In 1497 an opening took place . The parish Heiligkreuz (Amptenzell) extended over the mountain court into the Thurgau and into the abbot-Sankt-Gallic area. After the congregation had accepted the new faith, the St. Gallen monastery began to drive the Counter-Reformation forward: in 1540 the Protestant population lost the chaplaincy to the abbot, around 1575 the Protestant church service ceased completely. The Protestant residents have belonged to the Schönholzerswilen parish since 1718 .

Parish before the merger in 1971

In the 19th century mainly arable and fruit growing was practiced, there was also a weaving mill. The transition to cattle and dairy farming took place towards the end of the 19th century. In Heiligkreuz, agriculture has remained the most important branch of industry up to the present day.
