The Hangelarer Heide is an area worthy of nature protection in the Hangelar district of the city of Sankt Augustin . The landscape, traversed by numerous roads ( federal highways 59 , 560 and 565 , Bundesstrasse 56 , Geislarer Strasse , Siegstrasse and Meindorfer Strasse ) and settlement extends from Sankt Augustin-Ort in a westward direction to Meindorf , where it merges into the Siegaue . In the north the heath is bordered by the town of Menden , in the south lies the Bonn / Hangelar airfield , whose green areas are also considered part of the Hangelar heath . The area is one of nine natural areas of the North Rhine-Westphalian Landscape Project Green C . The heather is one of the largest open spaces in the Cologne / Bonn metropolitan area. The Hangelar Heide is an important biotope for rare plant and animal species.

Structure and history

The area known as Hangelarer Heide belongs geologically to the adjoining Bergische Heideterrasse, and thus to the greater area of Wahner Heide . The area consists of a large number of different sections: an airfield area, agricultural areas, former gravel and sand pits and other excavation areas, open land and lean grassland . Characteristic of the biotopes that exist here are the poor, drifting sand soils on which small-flowered plants could settle, as well as the wet biotopes ( miners ', Deutag and missionaries' pits ) created in the earlier mining areas . The use of flocks of sheep and highland cattle keeps the vegetation short so that the space remains open and wide - important for larger and migratory birds. The ongoing deforestation on and around the airport area also led to the special vegetative development of the heather area. The emergence of the species-rich natural area was also supported by the compensatory measures implemented here for construction projects in the urban area.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the heath was used as a parade ground on the right bank of the Rhine for the Bonn garrison by Prussian troops (e.g. the hussar regiment "King Wilhelm I" ). Later, in addition to agricultural use, it was used as a flight area and as a mining area. The extent of the natural area shrank after the war due to the increasing expansion of neighboring villages and commercial use as well as the construction of motorways and roads. A protest action by the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany against a closing fair as part of World Youth Day 2005 brought the importance of the Hangelar Heath as a natural area to the public's attention. As a reaction to the planned large-scale rally, the Hangelarer Heide protection community was created in April 2004 as an amalgamation of eight associations and groups, which aims to secure the entire area for the purpose of a later nature reserve designation.

In connection with the Hangelarer Heide natural area, there are other areas in the area, e.g. B. the former gravel pits west of Hangelar, some of which have already been declared as a protected landscape component.

Plant and animal population

In 2004, 45 plant species, 6 plant communities and 94 animal species were found in the area of the Hangelarer Heide , which were classified as endangered in 1999 in the " Red List " published by the State Institute for Ecology, Land Management and Forests in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Wild mallow , donkey thistle , heather cloves , cruciferous flowers , horn clover and lemon thyme grow here . The heather is the habitat for a large number of different passerine birds such as skylark , meadow pipit , stonechat , crested lark , nightingale , great tit , blackbird , song thrush , blackcap , blackcap and rattle warbler , smoke and the like. House martin , goldhammer , linnet , house sparrow , dunnock , chiffchaff , fitis , greenfinch , whinchat , chaffinch , wren , wagtail , garden warbler or red backed killer . In addition, here live geese and waders ( herons , Egyptian Goose and Mallard ), Charadriiformes and apodiformes as lapwing and swifts . Migratory birds resting in the heather are white storks and cranes . Fowl and pigeon birds such as partridge and wood pigeon and birds of prey and ravens ( black and red kites , tree hawks , honey buzzards and kestrels , carrion crows and magpies ) are also to be found. In dry habitats live insects such as wine chicken and praying mantis , various wild bees and grasshoppers , the wetlands attract cross and toads on. Other inhabitants of the heather are brown hares and sand lizards .
