The Steyler Bank GmbH is a credit institute and a church bank of the Steyler missionaries . It was founded in 1964 in Sankt Augustin , where its head office is still located today, and invests money on an ethical basis. The Steyler Bank also has a branch in Austria .

Steyler Bank is a private bank in the legal form of a limited liability company and has share capital of around EUR 2.5 million. The deposit business will primarily operate for private and institutional customers. The focus is on investment advice and asset management. As a bank of the Divine Order of Mission , it also feels committed to the goals of the missionaries, justice, peace and the integrity of creation. It also offers foundation advice and currently manages 197 trust foundations (as of 2013).

history

The bank was founded on December 4, 1963 under the name Steyler Missionssparinstitut Sankt Augustin GmbH . After it was entered in the commercial register on February 13, 1964, the bank began its business activities. The Divine Word Missionaries had previously been entrusted with funds, the interest income of which the missionaries could use for their work. This was no longer permitted by the banking supervisory authority in 1964 , so the Steyler missionaries decided to found their own bank.

Until the end of the 1990s, the focus was still on the classic area of financial investments, but since 2000 the securities area has been added. In 1999 the name was changed to Steyler Bank GmbH . In 2002 the branch in Austria was opened; On June 1, 2018, it was relocated from the St. Gabriel Mission House in Maria Enzersdorf to the city center of Vienna , because the previous rooms were needed by the Order for another purpose.

Fields of activity

Customers

Only about 25% of the 16,000 or so customers come from the greater Cologne / Bonn area . The much larger number comes from all over Germany, with a focus on southern Germany. The Steyler Bank is also active internationally. Customers do not have to be Catholic, live in the area of the Archdiocese of Cologne or be employed by a church organization. This is what distinguishes the Steyler Bank from similar church banks of other denominations .

interest

The Steyler Bank pays market-oriented and customary interest. The customer decides whether a certain percentage of his interest will be made available for the projects of the Steyler Mission.

Securities

Steyler Bank has been launching two of its own open-ended investment funds since 2012 . These are an equity and a pension fund. (Sustainability fund together with the MMWarburg & CO bank ). However, Steyler Bank's equity fund also contains investments in controversial companies, which the bank points to in a watch list. With a fund of 2.5 million euros, the bank itself holds almost 18% of the 15 million euros in equity fund. (As of June 30, 2013). Customers are also offered securities from other companies that meet defined social, cultural and ecological criteria.

Ethical investment

One focus of Steyler Bank is in the area of ethical or sustainable investments . If the customer so wishes, he can use certain criteria to determine which exclusion criteria he would like to use. Examples of this are: child labor , the nuclear industry , the armaments industry, etc. In this context, the bank works with the Munich agency oekom-research . The criteria used go back to the Frankfurt-Hohenheim guidelines by Johannes Hofmann.

Appropriation of profits

In 2012, Steyler Bank managed customer assets of € 409.4 million and achieved a profit after taxes of € 0.32 million. Together with the interest and capital donations from the customers, the bank was able to pass on € 3.37 million to the Steyler Mission, which supports numerous aid projects in 70 countries around the world.
