Cicero M. Idleman

Cicero Milton Idleman (born August 18, 1854 in Marion , Ohio , † April 17, 1943 in Portland , Oregon ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ).

Career

Cicero Milton Idleman, son of Catherine Ann Pontius (1828-1898) and Silas Idleman (1822-1903), who married in Marion in 1844, was born in Marion County in 1854 and grew up there. His youth were overshadowed by the civil war. He attended schools in Marion until he was 15 and then attended Smithville Academy for two years . He then began to attend Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware (Ohio), but left it at the end of his third year of study ( junior year ) to take up a job with the State Railroad Post. He worked there for two years. In his spare time he studied law ( read law ). In 1883 he was admitted to the Ohio bar. He moved west in 1884. He was admitted to the Oregon bar that same year. In June 1884 he became a junior partner in the law firm of Johnson, McCown & Idleman, where he worked until 1894. At this time he joined the law firm of Carey, Idleman, Mays & Webster where he worked until January 1895.

In the 1894 election he was elected Attorney General of Oregon. He held the post for four years from January 14, 1895 to January 9, 1899.

After the end of his tenure he resumed his work as a lawyer. In the following years he was no longer active as a partner in any law firm. As a lawyer, he distinguished himself with a comprehensive understanding of the legal system and the willingness to prepare thoroughly in any case. In the courtroom, he exuded great clarity, seriousness and strength in his pleadings. His reasoning in court has rarely been seriously challenged. The many lawsuits won brought him a steadily growing clientele over time.

On April 3, 1907, in Portland, Oregon, he married Miss Margaret E. Denning of Indiana , daughter of Job Denning. Idleman was a member of the Phi Delta Theta , the National Geographical Society, the Oregon Historical Society, the Oregon College of Sciences, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows , the Knights of Pythias , the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and the Royal Arcanum . He was also a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the State Chamber of Commerce, the Press Club and the Progressive Business Mens Club . During the First World War he sat on the Legal Advisory Board and the Questionnaire Board. He was among the three men who founded the Portland Chamber of Commerce in 1891 and among the 15 men responsible for building the Chamber of Commerce building. 1908 served as chairman of the Republican County Central Committee of Multnomah County and for 20 years as president of the Multipor Republican Club of Portland. He was a friend of the President of the United States Warren G. Harding . During his presidential election campaign in 1920 , he campaigned for him.
