Isaac Homer Van Winkle (born December 3, 1870 in Halsey , Oregon , † December 14, 1943 ) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ).

Early years

Issac Homer Van Winkle, son of Elizabeth Ann Pearl and Isaac Newton Van Winkle, was born in Linn County . Nothing is known about his youth. Van Winkle attended Willamette University in Salem (Oregon), where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1898 . He then studied law at Willamette University College of Law . He graduated there in 1901 and later worked there as dean. On September 3, 1902, he married Lella Velvetta Parrish († 1918). The couple had a daughter named Rosalind.

Public career

Van Winkle was Deputy Attorney General of Oregon from 1904 to 1913 and then from 1915 to 1920 . He was also a lecturer (instructor) at Willamette University College of Law from 1905 to 1913 . In the final year, 1913, he became dean of the faculty - a position he held until 1927. The Van Winkle Melton Endowed Professorship at Willamette University College of Law was named in his honor.

On October 14, 1920, Oregon Governor Ben W. Olcott appointed him the new Attorney General of Oregon to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of George M. Brown . That same year he was elected Attorney General of Oregon for a full four-year term. Van Winkle was re-elected five times in 1924, 1928, 1932, 1936 and 1940. He died on December 14, 1943 before the end of his last term. In 1938 he ran for a judge's post at the Oregon Supreme Court , but suffered defeat and continued his practice as Attorney General.
