George M. Brown

George M. Brown (born May 5, 1864 in Douglas County , Oregon , † June 18, 1934 in Oregon) was an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ).

Early years

George M. Brown, son of Sarah Flett and Thomas Brown, was born in Douglas County during the Civil War . His parents immigrated to Oregon Country in 1847 during the Mexican-American War . Brown attended local schools. He then went to Umpqua Academy, where he graduated in 1883. He then attended Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, where he graduated in 1885. After being in Salem Jura studied ( reading law ), he received in 1891 in Oregon, a license to practice law.

Legal career

From 1894 to 1896 he was a District Attorney in the 2nd Judicial District of Oregon, with his headquarters in Roseburg (Douglas County). After his re-election, he held the post until 1908. In the 1914 election he was elected Attorney General of Oregon. He was re-elected in 1918. He held the post from January 4, 1915 until his resignation on October 14, 1920. His term of office was overshadowed by the First World War . In his new capacity, he along with his Deputy Attorney General John O. Bailey the state before the Supreme Court of the United States in the case v Bunting. Oregon . The United States Supreme Court decided in a landmark ruling to uphold a law of Oregon, where the employer could regulate the maximum number of hours a worker could work.

The Governor of Oregon Ben W. Olcott summoned him on 14 October 1920, Judge of the Oregon Supreme Court to the vacancy to fill, by the resignation of Alfred S. Bennett was born. That same year, 1920, he won election for a full six-year term as a judge. He was re-elected in 1926. He held the post of judge until the end of his term in 1933.
