Andheri is the largest urban district of Mumbai , the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra , with around 1.6 million inhabitants and an area of ​​around 48 km² .

location

The Andheri district on the island of Salsette is about 25 km (driving distance) north of the center of Mumbai at an altitude of about 0 to 25  m ; it borders on the Arabian Sea to the west, to the north the boroughs of Goregaon and Borivali . The quickest way to reach Andheri (travel time approx. 25 minutes) is with the Western Line from Churchgate station with the suburban trains that run approx. Every 10 minutes. The railway line divides the district into Andheri-West and Andheri-East . Mumbai's International Airport ( Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport ) is located south of Andheri-East .

Population and economy

Many residents of Andheri work and study in the center of the mega city of Mumbai and are therefore on the road in the mornings and evenings. In addition to Hindus and Muslims, there are minorities from other religious communities such as Sikhs , Buddhists , Parsees , Christians, etc. Since around 1930, several smaller and larger film studios (e.g. Filmalaya ) have settled in Andheri ; most of them have since moved further north.

Gilbert Hill

The imposing 40 m high basalt block of Gilbert Hill is located about 800 m west of the Andheri Railway Station and is considered a remnant of volcanic activity about 65 million years ago. There are two modern Hindu temples on its summit . The rock was designated as a nature reserve in 1952.
