Ludwig Thienemann

Friedrich August Ludwig Thienemann (born December 22, 1793 in Gleina ; † June 24, 1858 in Trachenberge ) was a German medic and ornithologist. He was famous for his pictures of the identification of bird eggs.

Life

Thienemann studied medicine at the University of Leipzig . After graduating as Dr. med. he settled as a general practitioner in Leipzig . Out of zoological interest he undertook a one and a half year trip to Iceland and Norway with Gustav Biedermann Günther . It aroused his enthusiasm for ornithology.

After his return , he completed his habilitation in Leipzig. He gave zoological lectures and devoted himself particularly to oology . In 1824 he was appointed deputy inspector of the Dresden Natural History Cabinet. From 1839 he was also the cabinet's librarian. Since he couldn't get along with the library director Ludwig Reichenbach , he resigned in 1842. Withdrawn into private ornithological research, he died at the age of 65. His valuable natural history cabinet consisted of 2,000 nests and 5,000 bird eggs with 1,200 species .

Honors

In 1838 he was accepted into the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
