Carl Wilhelm Gottfried Paeßler (short: Wilhelm Paeßler ; born September 18, 1809 in Gernrode ; † August 20, 1884 in Harzgerode ) was a German ornithologist , oologist , teacher and Protestant theologian . Paeßler was buried in Mühlstedt .

Live and act

Paeßler came from a long-established Anhalt family of officials, theologians and court owners to whom u. a. the Melanchthon House belonged. His father, Ernst Paessler, was a judicial officer in Gernrode. His wife Agnes Marie Elise b. Böther (1828–1872) was the sister of Hermine Laura Elise Böther (1830–1898). She was married to Karl Albert Naumann, who in turn was a son of Carl Andreas Naumann and a nephew of Johann Friedrich Naumann . His large egg collection went to his sons Ernst Karl Wilhelm Paeßler (1851–1909) and Carl Friedrich Richard Paeßler (1856–1942), who lived in Hamburg, and they expanded the collection until their deaths. Richard Paeßler bequeathed the egg collection to the Zoological Museum Hamburg , where it was in the hail of bombs on 29./30. June 1943 was destroyed. Another son named Alfred Paeßler (1858–1933) also lived in Hamburg. Paeßler had a total of five sons.

In 1822 Wilhelm Paeßler attended grammar school in Zerbst , which he left in 1830 with a first-degree censorship . In the same year he began to study philology and theology in Leipzig . In 1834 he completed his studies in Köthen with pro candidatura . Because of his earlier membership of the Leipzig fraternity Germania , a criminal investigation was initiated against him , which only ended much later with his acquittal. Between 1834 and 1841 he had to make his living as a private tutor before he was employed at the daughter's school in Köthen in 1841 . At Easter 1848 he became rector and afternoon preacher in Roßlau , and in 1852 pastor in Brambach . In 1859 he was finally called to Mühlstedt as pastor. In 1881 he retired and moved in with his third son Ernst, who was a pharmacist in Harzgerode.

From October 1st to 3rd, 1850, 12 ornithologists met in Leipzig and adopted the first provisional statutes of the DO-G. The u. a. August Carl Eduard Baldamus , Eduard Friedrich Poeppig the inspector of the Natural History Museum Robert Tobias , the doctor Ernst Schnürpel , the pastor Heinrich Zander (1800–1876), the factory owner Gottlob Heinrich Kunz , Professor Dr. Johann Friedrich Naumann , the naturalist Richard Freiherr Koenig von und zu Warthausen (1830–1911), the landowner Johann Kratzsch (1809–1887), the licentiate Friedrich Wilhelm Assmann , a Herr Pegner and rector Wilhelm Paeßler. Baldamus was elected provisional secretary and Kratsch was elected agent . Subject to the consent of those absent, Naumann, Zander, Eugen Ferdinand von Homeyer (1809–1889), Martin Hinrich Lichtenstein (1780–1857) and Pastor Brehm were elected to the board.

Paessler not only made a name for himself as an oologist and nidologist. As an experienced breeding biologist and faunist, he published many articles in the specialist journals Naumannia and Journal für Ornithologie , often about the avifauna in Saxony-Anhalt . When Christian Ludwig Brehm was looking for another author for Friedrich Wilhelm Justus Baedeker's Die Eier der Europaeischen Voegel painted after nature , his choice fell on Paeßler. The joint work, which appeared between 1855 and 1867, was certainly his most important publication. For Baedeker and Naumann he finally wrote the necrology in the journal for ornithology .

Paeßler's circle of friends included old masters such as August Carl Eduard Baldamus, Theobald Johannes Krüper (1829–1917), the forest master Gustav Ernst Friedrich Wiese (1809–1887), Eugen Ferdinand von Homeyer, Martin Hinrich Lichtenstein, Friedrich August Ludwig Thienemann and the collector Leopold Schrader (1812-1878).
