Blasius hemp
Blasius (Karl) Hanf (born October 30, 1808 in Sankt Lambrecht in Styria , † January 2, 1892 in Mariahof ) was an Austrian ornithologist . He was the father of the Benedictine monastery of St. Lambrecht and at the same time pastor of Mariahof.
Especially in the area around the Furtner pond on the Neumarkter Sattel he researched bird flight . His ornithological research site is still located there today, and the wetland biotope is close by . The wet biotope is a shallow water system with reeds completely separated from the pond , which has proven itself as a resting station and as a food source for migratory birds, as a spawning area for amphibians and as a habitat for dragonflies . Hemp was able to detect 237 different species of birds in the area around the Furtner pond.
Hemp collected over 2200 birds, prepared them and finally founded the ornithological department of the Stiftmuseum in St. Lambrecht Abbey, where he exhibited his preparations , which can still be viewed .
