The Furtner Teich (also Furtnerteich ) is a pond in the municipality of Mariahof in the Austrian state of Styria , which is of international importance as a bird sanctuary. Since the time around 1840, when the famous ornithologist Blasius Hanf began his observations at the Furtner pond, a total of 237 different bird species, 102 of them breeding species, have been recorded here. Part of the 500 meter long and 250 meter wide pond, which is designated as a protected area by the Natura 2000 directive , is used as a bathing pond and for fishing. The Adendorfer Bach flows through the pond and flows into the Metnitz via Urtelsbach and Olsa .
