The Great Perelik ( Bulgarian Голям Перелик [ ɡoʎjɐm perelik ]) is the highest mountain in the Rhodope Mountains . It is located in Bulgaria , 19 km west of Smolyan .
With this mountain, the Rhodope Mountains are in seventh place in Bulgaria, after:
- Rila with the musala
- Pirin with the Vihren ,
- Balkan Mountains with the Botev ,
- Vitosha with Cherny Vrach ,
- Osovska Mountains with the Ruen and
- Slavyanka with the Gozew .
The Great Perelik is easy to climb, but currently (as of August 2008) the summit is not allowed because a unit of the Bulgarian armed forces is stationed there. The foot of the mountain can be reached in 40 minutes from the Perelik mountain hut.
The mountain has been namesake for Perelik Point , a headland on Robert Island in Antarctica , since 2008 .
