André-Alexander Weller (born January 30, 1968 in Bad Schlema ) is a German ornithologist , botanist and conservationist.

Live and act

Weller studied biology at the University of Konstanz from 1988 to 1994 . He wrote his diploma thesis Bioacoustic Investigations on Blackcaps (Sylvia atricapilla L.) at the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology in Radolfzell . Between 1995 and 1998 he did his doctorate at the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig . His dissertation was on biogeography, geographic variation and taxonomy of the genus Amazilia (Aves: Trochilidae) . Since 1999 he has been working as a research assistant at the museum u. a. as part of the German Research Foundation project biogeography and taxonomy of Andean hummingbirds . Since 2002 he has been secretary of the Brehm Fund for International Bird Protection eV , a fund that promotes research and breeding programs for highly endangered bird species from all over the world.

His ornithological research focuses on biogeography , evolution , taxonomy , systematics , morphology , ecology and hybridization of hummingbirds . In addition to ornithology, he also dealt with botanical questions. Even if his research focus is certainly ornithology, he has z. B. published in 2011 on vascular plants in the Canary Islands and Madeira .

Since 2012, he has been writing a report on research projects for the implementation of a national strategy on biological diversity for the Federal Ministry of Education and Research . From 2008 to 2014 he was editor-in-chief and since 2014 lecturer at Ornitología Neotropical .

Between 1993 and 1995 he took part in bird ringing campaigns at the ornithological station in Radolfzell, Lake Neusiedl and in a bird plan counting on Sylt . This was followed in 1997 by an internship with bird ringing in Mata dos Godoy . In 2007 he led an ornithological excursion in the Wagbach lowlands . Between 2007 and 2013 ornithological and natural history study trips to Tenerife , Mallorca , Madeira, the United Arab Emirates , Cyprus , Extremadura , Texel and the Rieselfeldern Münster followed . In a cooperation project with SPAY - Union for the Protection and Development of Hymettus Mountain , he monitored the bioacoustics of birds on the Hymettos in 2010 . In 2010 he conceptually supported the art & nature project Vogelflughafen Hamm . Between 2011 and 2013 he carried out botanical and ornithological excursions on the Siegniederung .

Between 1996 and 2009 he took part in numerous museum-related research trips. In 1996 he visited the Museu Nacional da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro , the Museu de Zoologia da Universidade de São Paulo and the Museu de Biologia Professor Mello Leitão in Santa Teresa for the Neotropical Ornithological Society . In 1996 and 2000 he visited the Natural History Museum at Tring as part of a grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG) . Between 1996 and 2004 he also traveled to the United States for the DFG . With visits to the American Museum of Natural History , the Museum of the Academy of Natural Sciences , the National Museum of Natural History , the Louisiana Museum of Natural History , the Louis Agassiz Museum of Comparative Zoology , the Field Museum of Natural History, and the Moore Laboratory of He was zoology at practically all the major natural history museums in the United States. In 2000 he visited the Instituto de Ciencias Naturales in Bogota and the Museo de Historia Natural in Lima . In 2001 it was the Natural History Museum in Bern and the Colección Ornitológica William H. Phelps in Caracas that he visited. The St. Petersburg Zoological Museum followed a year later, and the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2009 .

From 1999 to 2013 he chaired the Student Fund Committee of the Neotropical Ornithological Society . He has been a member of the Board of Directors in this company since 2008 .

First descriptions by André-Alexander Weller

Weller has described some species or subspecies that were new to science. He has with u. a. published together with Karl-Ludwig Schuchmann , Iris Heynen , Swen Christoph Renner , Eike Wulfmeyer , Alexander Cortés-Diago , Luis Alfonso Ortega and Luis Mazariegos-Hurtado .
