Karl-Ludwig Schuchmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl-Ludwig Schuchmann (born October 7, 1948 in Weiterstadt ) is a German ornithologist and conservationist.

Live and act

Between January 1970 and August 1979 Schuchmann studied sociology , political science , psychology and biology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main .

In the mid to late 1970s, he collected material for his doctoral thesis in the Caribbean. He corresponded u. a. with James Bond , who was considered an expert on the Caribbean avifauna at this time. During this time Schuchmann also met Bob Marley , who lived around the corner from him. In 1979 he received his doctorate at the Goethe University on the subject of the special position of the endemic hummingbird genus Trochilus in the Antilles .

From January 1980 until his retirement in December 2014, he was curator for ornithology at the Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig . From December 1987 to October 1993 he also worked as a lecturer and supervised doctoral theses in biology at the Goethe University. From May 1994 to December 2014 he gave lectures in organismic biology and imparted presentation techniques. His main research interests during this time were tropical ecology, animal-plant relationships and biogeography .

In spring 1988, he and colleagues from the Universidad del Valle in Cali were out and about in the superhumid rainforest in the southwest of Colombia to investigate the seasonal relationships between reproduction, moulting and food biology of birds in the west of the country as part of a three-year research project. As a result, he published z. B. together with Gertrud Schuchmann Wegert an article courtship behavior of the Guayana rock cock (Rupicola rupicola) . From March 1992, Alexander von Humboldt researched the interactions between hummingbirds and hummingbird flowers in the area of the ZFMK station on the Río Anchicayá , Colombia. At that time, Heike Brieschke was in charge of the station. His investigations are carried out as part of a two-year priority program of the German Research Foundation with the aim of researching "mechanisms for maintaining tropical diversity".

From May 1889 to July 1989 he worked with Luis Felipe Baptista (1941-2000) as a visiting researcher at the California Academy of Sciences and studied the Anna's hummingbird . In May 1994 he became a professor with the right to teach and a member of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . Here he teaches organismic biology, evolutionary biology and paleontology . From 2012 to 2016 he was visiting professor at the Instituto Nacional de Ciência e Tecnologia em Áreas Úmidas of the Federal University of Mato Grosso . Here he researched bioacoustics with the help of computer-aided analysis.

In 2009 he was a project manager in a team that used camera traps and direct observation to explore the terrestrial mammal fauna in the Brazilian Pantanal. The focus was on the research of the giant anteater . In 2011 he accompanied a project to record the biodiversity of migratory bird species , which was financed by the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico . Since 2014 he has been in charge of a project investigating the biogeography of endemic taxa of the Mata Atlântica and Amazonia. The project is supported by the Brehm Fund for International Bird Protection eV , a fund for research and breeding programs for highly endangered bird species from all over the world. Another project is research into the biodiversity of key taxa in the Pantanal with a database and method optimization, which is funded by the German Research Foundation.

When the Society for Tropical Ornithology began with a gathering primarily of bird lovers interested in the biology and keeping of hummingbirds in the Koenig Museum in Bonn in October 1980 , I was informed that a working group would be set up there, which was named "Working Group of Hummingbird Friends eV" in the Bonn Register of Associations in 1981 was registered. The driving force behind the association was Schuchmann.

Schuchmann was the editor of Tropical vertebrates in a changing world from the series Bonn zoological monographs . He also published books such as Kolibris - Keeping and Care , The Jamaica Hummingbirds - Trochilus polytmus and Trochilus scitulus or nectar birds. Biology, husbandry and care . For the fifth volume of the Handbook of the Birds of the World , he wrote the chapter on the hummingbirds.

First descriptions by Karl-Ludwig Schuchmann

Schuchmann described some species or subspecies that were new to science. He has with u. a. published together with Hans Edmund Wolters , Thomas Züchner , André-Alexander Weller , Iris Heynen and Eike Wulfmeyer . The new species and subspecies include chronological and a .:

species

The type of black- crowned nymph ( Thalurania nigricapilla ) described by Armando Valdes-Velasquez and himself is no longer recognized today. Rather, it is a synonym for a subspecies of the violet-crowned nymph ( Thalurania colombica subtropicalis Griscom , 1932).

Subspecies

Dedication names

In 1994, Kurt K. Günther named a three- toed terrestrial species Mirhipipteryx schuchmanni .
