The Río Anchicayá is an approximately 135 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the department of Valle del Cauca in western Colombia .

River course

The Río Anchicayá has its source in the Western Cordillera . The headwaters located about 3000  m above sea level are 30 km west-southwest of Cali . The Río Anchicayá initially flows in a predominantly north-northwest direction through the mountains. At river kilometer 88 the river is dammed by a dam. At river kilometer 73 the Río Digua meets the Río Anchicayá coming from the east. This then turns to the west. At river kilometer 67 there is a weir on the river. Between river kilometers 50 and 35, the Río Anchicayá flows north. At river kilometer 50, the river reaches the western Colombian coastal lowlands. In the lower reaches the river runs in a westerly direction. 15 km above the estuary, a larger estuary branches off to the left. The Río Anchicayá then turns to the northwest and finally flows 12 km southwest of the port city of Buenaventura into the Bahía de Buenaventura .

Hydrology and catchment area

The Río Anchicayá drains an estimated area of 1050 km². In the south the catchment area borders on that of the Río Raposo , in the north on that of the Río Dagua . The Parque Nacional Natural Farallones de Cali extends south of the Río Digua and south of the central reaches of the Río Anchicayá .

The mean discharge of the Río Anchicayá is 112 m³ / s. The catchment area of the Río Anchicayá lies in the humid tropical zone. This is characterized by tropical rainforest . The temperatures are relatively constant over the year. Furthermore, the climate is characterized by heavy rainfall and high humidity. The months of September to November usually see the highest rainfall on the Colombian west coast. In addition, there is a less pronounced rainy season between April and June.

Use of hydropower

On the upper reaches of the Río Anchicayá, at river kilometer 88, is the Alto Anchicayá dam ( ). The associated hydropower plant was put into operation in 1974. It has three Francis turbines (2 × 120 MW, 1 × 115 MW). The river is dammed over a length of around 4.5 km. The reservoir area is around 1.2 km².

At river kilometer 65 there is a weir ( ) that dams the river. Below the dam is the associated Bajo Anchicayá hydropower plant . This was completed in 1955–1957 and has 4 Francis turbines (2 × 13 MW, 2 × 24 MW).
