Yanshui

Yanshui or Yanshuei ( Chinese  鹽水 區 , Pinyin Yánshuǐ Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Kiâm-chúi-khu ) is a district of the government -immediate city of Tainan in the southwest of the Republic of China in Taiwan .

Location and description

Yanshui is located on the northern border of the urban area of Tainan. The district has an elongated shape with a lengthwise extension in an approximately northeast direction of 13 kilometers and a transverse extension of 4 to 5 kilometers. The district is part of the Jianan Plain and arose from alluvial land that the rivers Bazhang ( 八掌溪 , Bāzhǎng Xī ) and Jishuei ( 急水溪 , Jíshuǐ Xī ) have transported. The former also essentially forms the natural border to the north for the most part. The neighboring districts in Tainan are Xuejia in the west, Xiaying in the south, Xinying in the southeast and Houbi in the east. In the north and northwest, Yanshui borders the municipality of Yizhu in the neighboring district of Chiayi .

history

Yanshui is one of the oldest Han Chinese settlements in Taiwan. The place name ( Yanshui = 'salt water') indicates that the settlement, which is now inland, used to have direct access to the sea. In the 17th to 19th centuries there was a large salt water lagoon west of Yanshui, the Daofeng Lagoon ( 倒 風 內海 , Dàofēng Nèihǎi ), and Yanshui was one of the largest ports. The name 'Yanshui' was only adopted later, however. Previously, the place was known as Yuegang ( 月 港 , Yuègǎng ) or Yuejin ( 月 津 , Yuèjīn ). During the rule of Zheng Chenggong the importance of the place as a trading hub increased rapidly and during the reigns of the emperors Yongzheng , Jiaqing and Daoguang in the 18th and 19th centuries, Yuejin / Yanshui was considered one of the most important places in Taiwan. The phrase 一 府 、 二 鹿 、 三 艋 岬 、 四月 津 , Yī Fǔ, Er Lù, Sān Měngjiǎ, Sì Yuèjīn  - "first Fu, second Lu, third Mengjia, fourth Yuejin", which are the four most important places in Taiwan meant were: Tainan ( Fu ), Lukang ( Lu ), Mengjia (today Wanhua in Taipei ) and Yuejin . Over time, the lagoon silted up due to sediment and the port of Yanshui lost its importance. During the Japanese colonial period (1895 to 1945), the Japanese administration planned to build a railway line through Yanshui. However, local dignitaries declined to do so because of concerns about unfavorable fengshuis . As a result, the railway line was built around Yanshui and the place fell behind economically. After 1945, Yanshui became a township in the newly established Tainan County of the Republic of China . When the county was dissolved on December 25, 2010 and incorporated into Tainan City, Yanshui was given the status of a municipality ( , ).

population

With a population of just over 25,000, Yanshui was in 20th place among Tainan's 39 districts in 2017. Indigenous peoples make up approximately 0.3 percent of the population.

particularities

Yanshui is known nationwide for its swarm of bees fireworks ( 鹽水 蜂 炮 , Yánshuǐ Fēngpào , English Beehive festival ). According to tradition, the tradition goes back to 1885. At that time, during the reign of Qing Emperor Guangxu , an epidemic broke out in Yanshui in the summer, killing hundreds. According to tradition, people burned off numerous fireworks to drive away the evil spirits. From this the later annual fireworks custom developed. Visitors consciously expose themselves to fireworks rockets and put on appropriate protective clothing (motorcycle helmets, etc.). Getting hit by a missile is considered an auspicious sign.

Since 2011, the Yuejin Lantern Festival ( 月 津 港 燈節 , Yuèjīn Gǎng dēngjié ) has been held every year for the Chinese New Year , with various light installations along the water. There are several older temples worth seeing in Yanshui. These include the Wu Temple ( 武 廟 , Wǔmiào ), which dates back to the reign of Kangxi , the Hubi Temple ( 護 庇 宮 , Hùbì Gōng ), a Mazu temple whose beginnings go back to the last years of the Ming Dynasty, the Qielan Temple ( 伽藍 廟 , Qiélán Miào ) from the time of Qianlong and which was rebuilt after war destruction and the Dazhong Temple ( 大眾 廟 , Dàzhòng Miào ), also Jubo Pavilion ( 聚 波 亭 , Jùbō Tíng ) from that time Kangxis.
