Xigang , or Sigang ( Chinese 西 港區 , Tongyong Pinyin Sigǎng Cyu , W.-G. Hsi 1 -kang 3 Ch'ü 1 , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Sai-káng-khu ) is a district of the government -direct city of Tainan in the southwest the Republic of China to Taiwan .
Location and description
Xigang is located about 10 kilometers north of the historic city center of Tainan in the Jianan Plain , an alluvial plain in the southwest of the island of Taiwan. The district is roughly in the shape of an isosceles acute-angled triangle , the tip of which points towards the southeast. The maximum extent of the district is about 9.6 kilometers. The south-western boundary is largely formed by the Zengwen River ( 曾文溪 , Céngwén Xī ). Only the district of Xinfu (see below) lies south of the river. The adjacent districts are Anding in the southwest, in a small section Annan in the south, Qigu in the west, Jiali in the northwest and Madou in the northeast.
history
Xigang originated as a site in the 18th century during the reigns of Kangxi and Qianlong . The name ( Xigang = "West Harbor") indicates that at that time there was access to the sea via the Taijiang Lagoon ( 臺 江 內海 , Táijiāng Nèihǎi - “Taijiang Inland Sea”), which was later silted up by sediment . After the end of the phase of Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945) Xigang was a rural community ( 鄉 , Xiāng ) in the 1946 newly formed Tainan County in the Republic of China . On December 25, 2010, the county was incorporated into the city of Tainan and Xigang became a municipality ( 區 , Qū ).
population
The indigenous population makes up about 0.2 percent.

Administrative division
From 1946, the then rural community Xigang was divided into 14 villages ( 村 , Cūn ). In 1978 three largely depopulated villages were dissolved and in 1988 one (Qing'an) was created. Since then, Xigang has been divided into 12 villages (from 2010: 里 , Lǐ - "districts"). On January 29, 2018, the boundaries of the individual districts were redrawn. The number remained unchanged.
