history

An older name of Liuying is Chamuying ( 查 畝 營  - "field inspection camp ") and comes from the time of Zheng Chenggong , when attempts were made to cover Taiwan with a network of self-sufficient military farms. From what was then Liuying, the land was allocated in the area. At the time of the Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945) it was renamed Liuying ( 劉 營  - "Liu camp, camp of the Liu clan"). The name referred to the local Liu family with a large number of members. After Taiwan was transferred to the Republic of China in 1945, Liuying was organized as a rural community in Tainan County . On December 25, 2010, the county was dissolved and incorporated into the city of Tainan. All district communities, including Liuying, received the status of urban districts.

On June 3, 1968, a Curtiss C-46 of the Air Force of the Republic of China crashed in the area of Liuying . None of the more than 40 aircraft occupants survived.

population

With a little more than 21,000 inhabitants, Liuying is one of the smaller districts of Tainan. The population density is about half the average in Tainan. At the end of 2017, less than 0.5% of the population belonged to the indigenous peoples.
