The National Council for Scientific and Technological Development ( Portuguese Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico , until 1971 National Research Council CNPq ) is an organization that reports to the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Research ( Portuguese Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação ) and carries out research in Brazil promotes.

history

The CNPq was established on January 15, 1951 by Law No. 1.310. It is considered the most solid institution of scientific and technological research among developing countries.

The troubled post-war period (1949–1954) was also shaped by turbulence in national politics in Brazil, in which the CNPq expanded its interest in research into nuclear energy , which at that time became a strategically important topic. However, its role has evolved in the direction of funding, in the form of research funding and scholarships in various fields.

With its headquarters in the capital Brasília, the CNPq has long been the central coordination point for science and technology policy. However, the institution gave up this function with the creation of the relevant ministry in 1985.

The CNPq maintains contacts with many federal agencies in Brazil and foreign partners and donors.
