Subspecies

Distribution area of the long-tailed hummingbird

So far four subspecies have been recognized:

  • Eriocnemis luciani meridae Schuchmann , Weller & Heynen , 2001 - The range of this subspecies is limited to the state of Mérida in northwestern Venezuela.
  • Eriocnemis luciani luciani ( Bourcier , 1847) - The nominate form occurs in southwest Colombia and northern Ecuador.
  • Eriocnemis luciani baptistae Schuchmann , Weller & Heynen , 2001 - This subspecies is common in the central and southern part of Ecuador.
  • Eriocnemis luciani catharina Salvin , 1897 - This subspecies is present in northern Peru.
  • Eriocnemis luciani sapphiropygia Taczanowski , 1874 - This subspecies occurs in central and southern Peru.

Etymology and history of research

Jules Bourcier described the long-tailed hummingbird under the name Trochilus luciani . The type specimen was collected by Adolphe Delattre (1805-1854) in the Municipio Guaca in the Departamento de Santander . It was later assigned to the genus Eriocnemis . This name is derived from the Greek words »erion ἔριον « for »wool« and »knēmis κνημίς « for »cuff, leg splint «. The specific epithet was dedicated to the French entomologist Jean Baptiste Lucien Buquet (1807-1889). "Baptistae" was awarded in honor of the ornithologist Luis Felipe Baptista (1941–2000), who had recently died . »Meridae« stands for the distribution area of the subspecies, the Venezuelan state of Mérida. "Sapphiropygia" is made up of the Greek words "sappheiros, σάπφειρος " for "sapphire, lapis lazuli " and "-pugios, puge πυγή " for "-brumped, rump". It is not clear from his description to whom Salvin dedicated "catharina", but it could be that he dedicated the name to Catherine Edith Godman (1896–1982), the daughter of his friend Frederick DuCane Godman .
